For most home car detailing, a 4–6 gallon wet/dry vacuum is the best balance. It is large enough for useful airflow and stable wheels but still manageable in a crowded garage. Apartment users may prefer a 1–3 gallon compact model; frequent multi-vehicle work can justify 8–12 gallons.
Tank size does not tell you cleaning performance
Manufacturers put tank capacity on the largest label because it is easy to compare. For car interiors, however, hose reach, usable airflow, attachment shape, filtration, and how quickly the vacuum tips over matter at least as much. A huge tank does not make a narrow crevice tool pull sand from carpet more effectively.
Think about the entire cleaning path: where the vacuum sits, how far the hose reaches, whether the cord crosses a wet area, and where the machine will live between uses. The best size is the smallest one that remains stable and reaches both sides of your vehicle without constant repositioning.
Choose a size tier
Compact 1–3 gallon vacuums are easy to carry and store. They suit quick interior resets and apartment storage, but small hoses and filters may clog sooner. Mid-size 4–6 gallon models are the practical default for a one- or two-car household. Larger 8–12 gallon machines make sense when they also serve a workshop, handle frequent liquid pickup, or clean several vehicles.

The five specifications that change daily use
Look for a hose long enough to reach the far side of the cabin, a cord that reaches a protected outlet without unsafe improvisation, and wheels or a base that resist tipping. Confirm that replacement filters are available and that the supplied crevice tool is slim enough for seat rails.
Noise matters in attached garages and shared parking. Published sound ratings are not always comparable, so treat them as one clue rather than an absolute ranking. A longer hose may let you leave the loud motor farther from the cabin, but very long narrow hoses can reduce effective pickup.
Attachments worth paying for
A slim crevice tool, soft dusting brush, 1.25-inch or similarly maneuverable hose, and an upholstery nozzle cover most car work. A powered carpet head can help with embedded debris, but it adds cost and storage. Start with the basic tools; accessory compatibility is more useful than a large bundle of pieces that do not fit tight spaces.
Our decision rule
Measure the storage spot first. Then measure the farthest point from the planned vacuum location to the opposite footwell. Buy the smallest stable machine whose hose and cord arrangement covers that route safely. For most garages, that process lands in the 4–6 gallon range.
